Like the last few years, 2014 has been a busy year for the tech blog community. Mobile models introduced, new manufacturers, launches, leaks, court bans, lifts, and what not. The year has definitely kept us engrossed all through it. So let us just take a pause and freeze the industry right now and see what 2014 has left for us to carry over to 2015. Here is a list of mobiles that was best in their category and will be a worthy buy even as we enter 2015.
Best in Performance
Samsung Note 4
The Note series is the mother of all phablets. Samsung Note 4 was a step ahead of its predecessors and competitors in all dimensions. This sturdy and stylish phablet was not a giant leap for Samsung Design standards, but it was definitely a right foot forward. Powered by the latest Snapdragon 805, this device is a beast when it comes to performance. Clearly this is the flagship device of the year. Going by the Samsung trend, there will definitely be a price reduction and this device will be a great buy in 2015.
Magic out of thin air, the Oneplus is a device that managed to get everyone’s attention in 2014. I spent most of the year with this mobile. It is still sold by invite system and it was launched in India recently and will be available through Amazon exclusively. At Rs 21000, the 64 GB sandstone black edition is a hugely poplular and sought after mobile. Micromax managed to inflict a court ban on Oneplus One sale in India, but the ban was lifted and the device will be back in stock soon. So 2015 could be a good start if you manage to get this device. If you need an invite, do post a comment below and ill get you one. (Update – Invites exhausted, more expected soon)
HTC One M8
HTC is known for its design and sturdiness. The HTC One M8 is a sturdily built all metal flagship mobile. It is a great performer and its Zoe software assisted ultra pixel camera is a marvel to use. HTC faces stiff competition in Indian market and they dont seemed to be bothered by it. If HTC shows off its marketing prowess, it can be a stiff contender. It has the potential to be a good device to buy in 2015, but then… competition…
Sony Xperia Z3
Good battery life and awesome camera, the Sony Xperia Z3 will not surprise you if you already own a Sony Z series, but it is a classy Android device to own. Something has to be done about the Rachel UI, but apart from that part the Z3 is a fantastic flagship device at flagship price from the house of Sony. You can quite confidently start your year with the Z3, but you never know Sony will soon be coming out with more such awesome devices by Q2 of 2015.
The key highlight of the LG G3 were its QHD screen and laser assisted focus. The design of the LG G3 was completely unconventional and it was initially that it would not be convenient. But a few days of usage would prove that the physical design of the LG G3 is very comfortable for natural usage. While the year 2015 will see more QHD displays in the mobiles, LG G3 would be ahead of times when you own the device as the year begins.
Iphone 6 Plus
Finally Apple comes up with a large screen mobile. The premium segment in India is still dominated by Apple, though they dont have any direct tentacles in India. Apple needs to revisit its sales and service strategy in India and then I would strongly recommend this mobile. But if you an Apple fanatic and have been jealous about us Android folks on our screen sizes, iPhone 6 is here to soothe you. There is no need for me to emphasize on iPhone 6+’s performance, but the camera performance is noteworthy.
Nokia Lumia 830
A slim stylish Lumia mobile that has an awesome camera, the Lumia 830 is a beauty with brains. If you loved the camera of the Lumia 1020 and the design of Lumia 930 (icon), then the Lumia 830 is a gift for you. It is priced sensibly and the pureview camera is just awesome. The Lumia 830 is a great mobile to buy in 2015, but then if you wait a tad bit longer, you are sure to be surprised by great Lumia devices in 2015.
Mot0 G second gen
Following the grand success of the first generation, the Moto G second generation was launched in India, exclusively through flipkart. While this device did fail to impress as an upgrade, it is definitely a worthy predecessor for the solid first gen Moto G. If you decide to have a no-frills android device, the safest bet would any day be the Moto G.
Nokia Lumia 730
With the current trend and craze for Selfies, the Nokia Lumia 730 was among the first few mobiles that came into the market to create a new segment for selfie centered mobiles. Apart from the great camera, the Lumia 730 offers solid battery life and performance.
Xiaomi Redmi Note (4G)
Phablet? Affordable? Look nowhere else other than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G. The Redmi Note 3G is a great value for money, but the ability to connect to 4G networks in India along with Snapdragon processor gives the 4G version a great boost. Fortunately it is not only sold through the usual flash sales model, it will also be available in select Airtel stores.
Asus Zenfone 6
The Asus Zenfone is a 6 inch monster. It has a great battery life and a fantastic camera. I personally loved it for the Zen UI. It is close to AOSP android yet it has a few little nifty tricks up its sleeve. The only draw back is the 720p display. Otherwise if you are looking to buy a mobile that doubles as a e-book reader or entertainment on the go device, then the Zenfone 6 is the one.
Cheap and Best
Xiaomi Redmi 1s
Probably the most talked about mobile of the year 2014. The Redmi 1S marked the entry of Xiaomi into the Indian territory of value for money sector. No other mobile at this price band has such high hardware specs and features. There were people complaining about privacy and heating issues, but this mobile kept selling like hot cakes.
Nokia Lumia 530
If you are specific about buying a Windows Phone based mobile on a budget, the Lumia 530 is the device for you. It has comparatively low specs but it is also priced low. Go for the Lumia 530 only if you are on a very tight budget. If you can stretch your budget a little further you can get the 535 or even the 4G enabled 638
Wishing you all a very Happy Brand New-year and a gazillion tonne of happiness. Stay tuned for more exciting stuff in 2015 guaranteed from me.
