It has been a while since we saw a flagship device from Huawei. After having a successful run with the Nexus 6P last year, Huawei is now back and armed with heavy artillery. Huawei P9 is one of the first mobile from the Huawei stables, that has been developed in partnership with Leica. I have been using the Huawei P9 for a while now and it will soon be officially launched in India. So here is everything you need to know about the Huawei P9, ahead of the launch.
Metal Body Design
This is hands down the best looking mobile from Huawei till date. It has a fantastic feel to it. It is made of metal body and screams quality. The bezels around the display is almost non-existent. Leica cameras are known for their build quality and Huawei has made a mobile worthy of the Leica brand name to be on it.
The Huawei P9 has 5.2 inch display. It weights 144 grams and is very thin at just 7 mm. The metal body is not slippery and the optimal size of the mobile makes it very handy to hold and operate. It feels very slick and slim and I would place it among the mobiles which are ergonomically comfortable to use.
The P9 has a 5.2 inch full HD display. The display is elegantly crafted with the body and mergers on to the metal body seamlessly. It has a slight curve at the edge where glass meets metal. Bezels are non existent and that gives an immersive feeling to the display. The colors are punchy and viewing angles are great.
Gorilla Glass 4 protection
The mobile is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and also on the camera mobile strip at the back.
Fast and accurate Fingerprint sensor
Huawei has been consistently giving us mobiles with fast and accurate fingerprint scanner. On the P9, the fingerprint module is placed at the back below the camera. It took just 6 taps to register a fingerprint and then on, it would recognize the print at a blazing speed and accuracy.
Leica is a world renowned brand for lenses and camera. Leica is in partnership with Huawei to give co-develop and provide guidelines in imaging technology based on their accumulated knowledge. Believe me when I say, that the result is stunning.

Stellar Camera performance
Camera is the star in this mobile. When I first held the mobile in my hand, I didn’t have much expectation. But I was blown away by the camera capability. It has a fantastic dynamic range. Focusing is fast and accurate. The colors are vibrant, yet natural. The manual mode is truly a king in this mobile. It is one of the best implementation of manual mode. I can go on and on and on.. ranting about the stellar performance of the camera and eventually run out of words. So you can check out a few samples below.
Dual Lens, Dual Sensor
It has two camera modules at the back. Both the sensors are 12 MP modules. You must have heard about or even experienced dual camera setup in other mobiles. Some use it for 3D and a few for wide angle shots. But the P9 uses one sensor to capture RGB information and the other sensor for depth and contrast. The information from the other sensor would feed only B/W color details to the processor. It does not mean that the sensor will click black and white pictures. I have seen some video reviews, where people cover up the RGB sensor and expect BW pictures. But that is not the case. Having said that, there is a monochrome mode in the camera. Picture in monochrome chrome mode are stunning, because there is a dedicated sensor feeding in the contrast details. If you are familiar with photography, you would know that BW pictures are not just discarding color information, but it is about the right levels of contrast and black levels.
This information helps in clicking colorful pictures as well. The color reproduction also depends on the contrast information.
The Huawei P9 supports clicking pictures in RAW mode. RAW mode is very useful for trained photographers, who want to post process their photos and get more out of it.
Dual SIM (Hybrid and no VoLTE Support)
The mobile has dual SIM support. The sim tray can take in two SIM cards or one SIM card and a SD card. Sadly it does not support VoLTE.
