As a part of world dance day, the traditional dances of our cultural rich country was celebrated in Bangalore. I had a chance to witness it this year, conducted by Sai Arts International. It was a scintillating experience filled with excellent performances by super-humanely talented young artists. Here are a few stills from the events to share my experience with the world.

Dance is an integral part of Indian Culture. Indian traditional Dance in its purest form is truly divine. I am proud to be born in a culture that is very rich in art forms such as Dance. Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple Sculptures – Part 2

The famous Kambatadi Mandapam is known for its intricately modeled sculptures. Apart from the famouse Meenakshi Wedding sculpture, it has many other beautiful sculptures of Shiva, Nandi, Dakshinamoorthy and a host of other Gods and Goddesses in various poses. This is one place in the temple I love to spend hours just watching the sculptures.

Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple – Sculptures – I

Madurai, dubbed as the Athens of the east, is the ideal place for both pilgrims and photographers. The city is home to thousands of temple and primarily the Meenakshi Amman Temple. This temple was my playground during my childhood. I remember how I used to freely roam around the temple, climb the elephant statues, feed the fishes, parrots and have fun. But now the situation has changed drastically. There is high security check before entering the temple. They wouldn’t let even my camera bag in. They have re-painted all the ancient wall paintings and literally destroyed it. In the name of chemical wash, all the statues look shiny and artificial. Boards, fences, warnings, restrictions, entrance fee and every trick in the book to spoil an ancient monument and strip its authenticity is now being followed. I am afraid that the next generation may not be able to enjoy the serenity of sanctity of this wonderful monument as I have. So to salvage whats possible and whats left in the temple, I have decided to go there whenever possible and click pictures and record videos. Yakshagana

Yakshagana is a folk form of art originating from the Malenadu regions of Karnataka, India. It is famous for its elaborate costumes and simplicity of language. The story reaches the common folklore much effectively. Though this is a pre-classical combination of dance, story, costume and music, it is still popular in the region. Ideally it goes on all through the night, but this particular event which I got to cover, was concluded by 9 in the night. Still I got access to the costume room and interacted with the artists before convincing them to pose for me. (Thanks to my broken Kannada)
